Majesty of Ancient World Map
I think that an ancient world map is one of the most captivating of decorations. Wall maps of the ancient world have the same sense of dimension as modern maps. Like modern maps, they allow us to dream of travel to unknown locals and experience unimagined adventures. However, looking at ancient world maps is in some ways even more dramtaic. An ancient world map is from a time before the entire planet had been charted by modern science. The pictures are beautiful and detailed in an ancient world map, if somewhat inaccurate, and show all types of fantastic and imagined creatures. My ancient world map shows a great dragon in the middle of the pacific, and a lost island of gorgeous nymphs somewhere in the North Atlantic of all places. There is a romance to the age of sail that somehow is only captured by an ancient world map, and is lost to the modern world.
The modern viewer, however, can still appreciate the majesty of an ancient world map, especially when it is of a good decorative size. A map of the ancient world can make the perfect distraction, inviting the viewer to move beyond the distractions of the day, and look towards the skies, as it were. And there is no better present than an ancient world map, especially if you are someone who has young people to get gifts for. Kids just love to daydream about dragons and elves all day, and an ancient world map can feed these fantasies. When I was a kid, I even enjoyed drawing my own ancient world maps, imagining that the world was a similar shape in ancient times, but was populated with all types of fantastic creatures. Who knows. It might have been.
For history buffs, an ancient world map can be a neat toy as well. It not only illuminates the myths of ancient people, but also says quite a bit about their technology and their travels. By looking at an ancient world map, you can see what areas were extensively travelled, and what were not. You can see where the powers of observation of ancient mariners were good and where they were somewhat lacking. And most of all, you can tell how important sea travel has been to the development of our modern civilization, and come to an appreciation of the scope of modern human achivement and ancient contribution.
